A recent account explaining Grand Theft Auto’s delays does not include a direct statement from Rockstar Games, despite presenting the story as an official explanation. Instead, it draws on Bloomberg reporting by Jason Schreier and offers additional analysis of the game’s long development.

The game is slated to launch on November 19, 2026, after its planned release moved from 2025 to May 2026 and then to November. The account describes several factors that may have lengthened development, but it does not provide a new Rockstar announcement or a direct comment from the studio.

How the plans changed

The game was once developed under the codename Project Americas, with a scope that included parts of North and South America. That plan was later narrowed to the greater Vice City area, based on Miami, according to the account. It says Rockstar had intended to work on the game alongside Red Dead Redemption 2, but shifted staff to finish the latter for its 2018 release.

The account also cites Schreier’s estimate that the coronavirus pandemic cost the game at least a year of development time. It describes the pandemic as another setback after the project had already lost momentum while Rockstar focused on Red Dead Redemption 2.

What is not confirmed

Other possible pressures include Dan Houser’s departure from Rockstar and the company’s growth from 2,441 employees in 2018 to 4,711 in recent years. The account says Rob Nelson, Phil Hooker and Aaron Garbut shared development leadership duties after Houser left. Its suggestion that a larger team and shared leadership made decisions harder is analysis, not a direct explanation from Rockstar.

The account does not establish that Rockstar has issued a rare official development update, and it includes no direct company quote explaining the delays. The specific reasons for each change to the release schedule have not been confirmed by Rockstar in the material described.
